CPAP Sleep Apnea Treatment

"All dimensions of sleep were impaired by AR, particularly by the severe type. Sleep was significantly more impaired in patients with severe AR than in those with the mild type."

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep Apnea is a breathing disorder that is common in adults and rarely observed in children. There are three types of Sleep Apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) or Mixed Sleep Apnea (a combination of Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnea). The primary difference between the two types of sleep apnea involves the brain sending or not sending a signal to the muscles responsible for initiating the body to take a breath. There is no signal sent by the brain if an individual is diagnosed with CSA. The signal to communicate to the muscles to breathe does occur in patients with OSA and the muscles respond.

However, in OSA the process of breathing is non-productive because the airway becomes obstructed preventing the normal flow of oxygen into the lungs. Airflow may be diminished by a deviated septum (a structural misalignment of the middle wall of the nose), obstructed by swollen turbinates (filters & moisturizers) inside the nose, an abnormally long uvula (the elongated soft tissue structure hanging in the back of the throat) or a narrow airway at the base of the tongue and palate that collapses backwards when pharyngeal muscles relax while sleeping in a flat position at night.

Obesity impacts how severe sleep apnea progresses. Approximately, 30 to 50% of cardiac patients and 60% of stroke patients live with obstructive sleep apnea. Prior to age fifty, OSA is more prevalent among men. Risk is equally distributed among men and women above age fifty. OSA contributes to the development of high blood pressure and heart complications.

Ultimately, the goal should be to avoid surgical treatment of sleep apnea. Modifying sleep position behavior can reduce apneas. Exercise, diet and a healthy lifestyle will improve sleep apnea. Medicinal, dental appliances and sleep apnea equipment are other non-surgical interventions.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a widely used sleep apnea machine that coordinates the delivery of forced oxygen into a sleep apnea mask to overcome airway obstructions and to promote normal breathing function.

Improve Compliance and Get Relief

Currently, CPAP treatment is one of the most effective and safe treatments available to treat severe obstructive sleep apnea. However, allergies and colds can adversely impact an individual's ability to properly use the system. Adverse side-effects such as sore nasal passages, congestion, dry mouth and a sore throat can negatively impact the quality of life of individuals dependent upon CPAP technology and reduce their willingness to use it throughout the night.

The SinuPulse Elite uses pulsatile irrigation technology to deliver a gentle pulsating stream of buffered saline solution to rinse congested sinus passages. A special misting tip attachment is available to help moisturize sore nasal passages and sore throats dried out by the continuous flow of positive air pressure delivered when breathing in or out. Many are searching for effective sleep apnea remedies. However, the ultimate responsibility to effectively manage the disorder involves making lifestyle changes in combination with medical intervention.

We invite you to order a SinuPulse Elite system to compliment your sleep apnea management program. Information about other applications for pulsatile irrigation is accessible throughout our website.
