Rhinitis Treatment

Rhinitis is the inflammation of the inner lining of the nose often resulting from exposure to allergens inside and outside, in your daily environment. Individuals typically will experience a runny nose, stuffiness, post nasal drip and burning eyes during specific seasons of the year (Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis) or throughout the entire year (Perennial Allergic Rhinitis).

Allergic rhinitis is commonly caused by springtime pollens disbursed during pollination by trees and grasses; distributed in the wind and jet stream. The condition called Cedar Fever has been coined by individuals in certain parts of the country where vast amounts of cedar pollen wreak havoc on their immune systems leading to horrible headaches resulting from the major sinus congestion.

Weed pollens often reach their peak levels during summer and early fall. Ragweed is one of the most prolific weeds nationwide and responsible for releasing massive amounts of pollen and aggravating the symptoms of tens of millions of allergic rhinitis sufferers. The wet weather conditions often associated with the fall and winter months are ideal conditions for mold and fungus growth. Molds spore dissemination and can be extremely aggravating to highly sensitive people.

One strategy to control exposure to outdoor allergens during peak times is to stay indoors. Often this is an effective strategy at reducing symptoms. However, if you are one of the unfortunate individuals living in a climate where the relatively humidity is high, you may be highly sensitive to the allergens floating around in the dust of your house. Such allergens include dust mites, which are microscopic creatures that feed off of the dead skin cells your body sheds each day. The waste products of these uninvited house guests are one of the major contributors to the worsening of indoor allergy symptoms. The proteins of dog and cat dander are also distributed by the dust in our homes.

Non-Allergic Rhinitis:

Non-allergic rhinitis symptoms often resemble allergic rhinitis but are triggered by environmental challenges such as temperature and humidity fluctuations, smoke, chemical irritants and medications. In addition, hormonal changes involved in the biological processes of the body during pregnancy, menses, and puberty can cause rhinitis symptoms.

Pregnancy Rhinitis:

Pregnancy Rhinitis is responsible for adversely affecting the quality of life of pregnant women. Although the specific mechanisms of Pregnancy Rhinitis are still being studied and are not fully understood, placental growth hormones are believed to be a major contributor to the side-effects characteristic of rhinitis. Factor in a woman already suffering from Seasonal Allergic, Perennial Allergic or Non-Allergic Rhinitis, complicated by Pregnancy Rhinitis and the symptoms can become even more challenging to manage.

The quality of life for women suffering from Pregnancy Rhinitis is uncomfortable because of their choice to often avoid the use of medications for symptom control because of concerns they might adversely affect the development of their babies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) position is that there are no drugs that are completely safe during pregnancy. An attempt by the FDA to assign risk categories is outlined on their website:
